     Baard Johannesson Steine was born in 1688 at Steine, Kvam, Hordaland.¹ He married Anna Knutsdotter Steine, daughter of Knut Vikingson Steine and Elseberg Jonsdatter Folkedal, in 1702. He died in 1745 at Steine, Kvam, Hordaland.¹

     Villum Nilsson Langeland was born in 1688 at Langeland, Samnanger, Hordaland.¹ He married Marita Olavsdatter Fossmark on 24 June 1715 at Samnanger sogn, Os prestegjeld, Hordaland.^1,2 Funeral rites were held for two infant sons on 11 March 1736.³

     Brita Knutsdatter Øvredal was born in 1688 at Øvredalen, Os, Hordaland.^1,2 She was christened on 25 March 1688 at Fusa sogn, Os prestegjeld, Hordaland.² She married Jon Pedersson Sævell, son of Peder Johannesson Sævell and Marita Johannesdatter, on 21 June 1711 at Fusa sogn, Os prestegjeld, Hordaland.¹

      Anna Torgilsdatter Gjøen was also known as Anna Torgilsdatter Utskot. She was born in 1688 at Gjøn, Fusa, Hordaland.¹ She married Hans Johannesen Utskot, son of Johannes Eyvindsson Håvik and Kari Utskot, on 2 July 1708 at Hålandsdal sogn, Os prestegjeld, Hordaland.^1,2 Her husband, Hans Johannesen, died in May 1714 at Utskot, Samnanger, Hordaland.^1,3 She married Samuel Hansson Lundarvik, son of Hans Engelson Gjøen and Magdela Andersdatter Håvik, on 16 June 1715 at Fusa sogn, Os prestegjeld, Hordaland.⁴ She died in 1763 at Utskot, Samnanger, Hordaland.¹

     Jon Syversen Horne was christened on 27 December 1689 at Horne, Øvre Eiker, Buskerud.² An intent to marry (trolovelse) was registered for Jon Siversen and Eli Børgesdatter on 7 February 1724 at Eiker prestegjeld, Buskerud.³ He married Eli Børgesdatter, daughter of Børge Hansen Loe and Gøran Pedersdatter, on 24 September 1724 at Eiker prestegjeld, Buskerud.³ His wife, Eli Børgesdatter, died before 17 December 1760 at Horne, Øvre Eiker, Buskerud.¹

     An intent to marry (trolovelse) was registered for Olef Andersen Grav and Marthe Andersdatter on 21 July 1709 at Eiker prestegjeld, Buskerud.¹ He married Marthe Andersdatter on 15 September 1709 at Eiker prestegjeld, Buskerud.¹

     Marte Christoffersdatter was born circa 1690 at Norderhov, Buskerud. She and Bjørn Torkildsen Aasterud were engaged on 5 June 1717.¹ She married Bjørn Torkildsen Aasterud, son of Torkild Bjørnsen, on 14 November 1717.¹

     Marthe Andersdatter was born circa 1690 at Eiker prestegjeld, Buskerud. An intent to marry (trolovelse) was registered for Marthe Andersdatter and Olef Andersen Grav on 21 July 1709 at Eiker prestegjeld, Buskerud.¹ She married Olef Andersen Grav on 15 September 1709 at Eiker prestegjeld, Buskerud.¹

     Anna Pedersdatter Haukanes married Johannes Andersson Haga, son of Anders Johannesson Haga and Brita Rasmusdatter Haga, in 1712.¹ She died in 1729.¹

     Anna Andersdatter Haga was born in 1690 at Samnanger, Hordaland.¹ She married Arne Johannesson Steintveit, son of Johannes Arnesen Steintveit and Brita Jonsdatter Steintveit, on 22 June 1721 at Samnanger sogn, Os prestegjeld, Hordaland.^1,2 She died in June 1742 at Steintveit, Samnanger, Hordaland.³ She was buried on 2 July 1742 at Samnanger sogn, Os prestegjeld, Hordaland.³

      Marita Olavsdatter Fossmark was also known as Marte Olsdatter Langeland.¹ She married Villum Nilsson Langeland, son of Nils Olavsson Langeland and Borgny Tomasdatter Gjerde, on 24 June 1715 at Samnanger sogn, Os prestegjeld, Hordaland.^2,3 Funeral rites were held for two infant sons on 11 March 1736.⁴ She died on 22 August 1759 at Langeland, Samnanger, Hordaland.^2,1 Funeral rites were held on 16 October 1759.¹

     Brita Larsdatter Rudne was born in 1692.¹ She married Hans Sveinsson Lauskard on 22 June 1721 at Samnanger sogn, Os prestegjeld, Hordaland.^2,1 She married Erentz Torbjørnson Lauskard, son of Torben Lasseson Djupevik and Anna Larsdatter Holsund, on 22 October 1730 at Samnanger sogn, Os prestegjeld, Hordaland.^1,3 She died in 1751.

     Rønnowe Andersdatter Loe was born in 1693 at Eiker prestegjeld, Buskerud.¹ She married Hans Børgesen Loe, son of Børge Hansen Loe and Gøran Pedersdatter, on 3 August 1721 at Eiker prestegjeld, Buskerud.²

     She appeared on the 1765 Census at Loe, Øvre Eiker, Buskerud, with her husband, a son and two servants, as: Rønov Andersdatter, wife.(See household and details).³ She died in April 1779 at Loe, Øvre Eiker, Buskerud.¹ She was buried on 21 April 1779 at Eiker prestegjeld, Buskerud.¹

      Hans Engelson Gjøen was also known as Hans Ingjaldsson Gjøen. He was born in 1693.¹ He married Marta Jakobsdatter Valen, daughter of Jakob Børgesson Valen and Kristin Alants.¹ He was sheriff (Skipreidelensmann) at Strandvik sogn, Os prestegjeld, Hordaland.¹

     Samuel Hansson Lundarvik was born in 1696 at Lundarvik, Fusa, Hordaland.¹ He married Anna Torgilsdatter Utskot on 16 June 1715 at Fusa sogn, Os prestegjeld, Hordaland.² He died in 1776.¹

     Nils Persson Smedby was born on 30 May 1696 at Smedby, Medåker, Åker, Västmanland län.¹ He was christened on 3 June 1696 at Smedby, Medåker, Åker, Västmanland län.² He was enrolled on 15 February 1715 as soldier 143 in Strömsholm's company in the Västmanland regiment of the army of Sweden. He lied on his age and is registered as 20 years old. On enrolling he was assigned the soldier's croft Ståltorp and the soldier name Ståhlboge. In March/April that year he is registered as home sick in the records of the regiment's annual maneuvers.³

     On March 8. 1716 (Februar 26. by the Swedish calendar) Swedish forces, among them Nils Persson Ståhlboge, aged 19, invaded Norway in Charles XII's first Norwegian Campaign, a part of the Great Northern War between Sweden and the alliance of Denmark-Norway, Russia and Saxony-Poland.

     The march against the capital was hindered by Norwegian fortifications, but the Swedish forces made their way around them and marched the last stretch on the sea ice of the Oslo fjord and occupied Christiania (now Oslo) on the 22nd of March.

     The Swedish forces were hammered by cannon fire from the Akershus fortress during the approach and again whenever the Norwegian forces got information on which buildings in the town were being used by the Swedes. Charles XII needed to take the fortress but had to wait for heavier guns and in the meanwhile his supply lines were seriously threatened when his forces in the town of Moss were captured by forces from Fredrikstad fortress.

     Västmanland's regiment was given the task of re-occupying Moss and reestablishing the depot there. They arrived on March 29th and started fortifying the town. They stayed in command of the town for nearly a month, but on the 23rd of April the Norwegian counter offensive started and the town was taken. 100 Swedes were killed, 522 were taken prisoner, among them Nils Persson Ståhlboge.

     Charles XII remained in Christiania until April 30th when the threat of being trapped by a superior Norwegian force became too large. The campaign was finally over on July 10th when the last Swedish forces crossed back into Sweden.⁴

     As a prisoner of war Nils was first transported across the fjord to Drammen with all the others. This took care of the immediate threat of Swedish forces attempting a rescue, but there was still the need for a large guard force which was then unavailable for active operations. A royal order dated May 5th asks for the prisoners to be sent to Denmark, but by then the local military authorities had already started sending groups of prisoners off to Norwegian cities and counties.

     Although an exchange of prisoners was not in the cards, lists of their names were handed over, and on one in the Swedish war archive over prisoners distributed around Norway we find prisoner no. 37 Niels Pehrsson Staalboe. Most prisoners were sent to Denmark as ordered, but several groups were transported to the home towns of the victorious Norwegian regiments, and as the first on the list of those transported to Bergen we find Niels Perssen Staalboe.⁴

     The prisoners in Bergen were distributed around the county as forced labour, and Nils was sent to Samnanger, Hordaland to work for the richest man in the parish, Peder Hansson Tysse.

     Common sense and various sources indicate that the life of a Swedish prisoner in Norway during the Great Northern War was hard and lonely. Many local lads were off fighting, or already dead, and the prisoners were conveniently close at hand for retribution. Local tradition has it though that Nils was a strong and able worker who won respect from his master and a likable and easygoing youth who won friendship from everyone else, especially from Peder's eldest daughter.⁴

     Around Christmas 1718 news arrived that Charles XII had been killed at Fredriksten fortress and that the war was over. Although Nils could now go home he chose to stay. Peder offered him a place as paid labour, not knowing that part of Nils's reason to stay was Peder's daughter Anna.

     Late autumn 1719 Anna told her mother she was pregnant. Tradition has it that when her father eventually was told he first wanted to kill Nils and then banished him. He was the richest man in the area and it was simply unacceptable that a simple servant had gotten his daughter with child. Only when Anna threatened to kill herself and his wife begged him to reconsider did he send someone to fetch Nils back.⁴

      An intent to marry (trolovelse) was registered for Nils Pedersen Smebøe and Anna Pedersdatter Tveit on 17 December 1719 at Samnanger sogn, Os prestegjeld, Hordaland.⁵ He married Anna Pedersdatter Tveit, daughter of Peder Hansson Tysse and Marita Knutsdatter Årland, on 6 January 1720 at Samnanger sogn, Os prestegjeld, Hordaland.⁵

     Local legend has it Nils was really accepted by his father-in-law and that he and Anna got one or more farms as a wedding present, but in reality they lived as tenant farmers on the farm Anna had been running for her father the year they ... got into trouble. It wasn't the richest of farms either, but Nils must have won acceptance in the community since we find Nils Tveit as sponsor in several christenings through the 1720s.⁴ He died on 11 April 1733 at Samnanger, Hordaland, in a flu epidemic, at age 36.⁶ He was buried on 18 April 1733 at Samnanger sogn, Os prestegjeld, Hordaland.⁷

     The tale of the Swedish prisoner of war who married the daughter of the richest man in the parish has fascinated genealogists in the area for a long time, not the least since he had 8 children, 46 grandchildren, at least 127 great-grandchildren and at least 320 great-grandchildren and by them likely several thousands descendants today. The source of most of the information about him, his nearest family and his time I've taken from the book "Nils Stålby" by Atle Ausestad, but there is much more there for anyone interested.⁴

     Arne Johannesson Steintveit was born in June 1696 at Steintveit, Samnanger, Hordaland.^4,1 He was christened on 5 June 1696 at Samnanger sogn, Os prestegjeld, Hordaland.¹ He married Anna Andersdatter Haga, daughter of Anders Johannesson Haga and Brita Rasmusdatter Haga, on 22 June 1721 at Samnanger sogn, Os prestegjeld, Hordaland.^5,6 His wife, Anna Andersdatter, died in June 1742 at Steintveit, Samnanger, Hordaland.⁷ He married Anne Polsdatter Holdhus on 17 June 1743 at Samnanger sogn, Os prestegjeld, Hordaland.^5,8 He died in January 1754 at age 57.⁹ He was buried on 6 January 1754 at Samnanger sogn, Os prestegjeld, Hordaland.⁹

      Gunnar Johannesson Torpe was also known as Gunnar Johannesson Svensdal.¹ He was born in 1698 at Torpe, Kvam, Hordaland.¹ He married Ågota Eriksdatter Svensdal, daughter of Erik Olavsson Svensdal and Eli Thomasdatter Frøland, on 18 June 1730 at Samnanger sogn, Os prestegjeld, Hordaland.^1,2 He died in 1777.¹

     Hans Børgesen Loe was born in 1699 at Loe, Øvre Eiker, Buskerud.^1,2 He was christened on 25 June 1699 at Eiker prestegjeld, Buskerud.² He married Rønnaug Andersdatter on 3 August 1721 at Eiker prestegjeld, Buskerud.³

     He appeared on the 1765 Census at Loe, Øvre Eiker, Buskerud, his wife, one son and two servants, as: Hans Børgersen, head of household.(See household and details).⁴ His wife, Rønnowe Andersdatter, died in April 1779 at Loe, Øvre Eiker, Buskerud.⁵

     Ågota Eriksdatter Svensdal was born in 1704.¹ She married Gunnar Johannesson Torpe, son of Johannes Larsson Torpe and Gunhild Sjovatsdatter Kjosås, on 18 June 1730 at Samnanger sogn, Os prestegjeld, Hordaland.^1,2

     Eli Børgesdatter Loe was born in June 1706 at Loe, Øvre Eiker, Buskerud.¹ She was christened on 13 June 1706 at Eiker prestegjeld, Buskerud.¹ An intent to marry (trolovelse) was registered for Eli Børgesdatter and Jon Siversen on 7 February 1724 at Eiker prestegjeld, Buskerud.² She married Jon Siversen, son of Syver Lauritzen Horne and Siri Jonsdatter, on 24 September 1724 at Eiker prestegjeld, Buskerud.² She died before 17 December 1760 at Horne, Øvre Eiker, Buskerud.³ Her estate was probated on 17 December 1760 at Eiker prestegjeld, Buskerud.³

      Kristi Hansdatter Steinsland was also known as Kristi Hansdatter Tveit. She was born in 1708 at Steinsland, Samnanger, Hordaland.¹ She was christened on 17 November 1708 at Fusa sogn, Os prestegjeld, Hordaland.² She married Knut Pedersson Tysse, son of Peder Hansson Tysse and Marita Knutsdatter Årland, on 2 July 1731 at Samnanger sogn, Os prestegjeld, Hordaland.^1,3 She died in 1789 at Tysse, Samnanger, Hordaland.¹

      Peder Thomasson Langeland was also known as Peder Thomasson Tysseland. He was born in 1709 at Tysseland, Samnanger, Hordaland.¹ He was christened on 5 January 1710 at Samnanger sogn, Os prestegjeld, Hordaland.¹ He married Anna Pedersdatter Langeland, daughter of Peder Hansson Tysse and Marita Knutsdatter Årland, on 15 June 1734 at Samnanger sogn, Os prestegjeld, Hordaland.² He died in 1797 at Langeland, Samnanger, Hordaland.³

     Anders Olefsen Grav was born in September 1711 at Grav, Øvre Eiker, Buskerud.¹ He was christened on 27 September 1711 at Eiker prestegjeld, Buskerud.¹ He married Else Christophersdatter on 4 October 1750 at Eiker prestegjeld, Buskerud.²
